AN estimated 500 people demonstrated in the Plaza de las Constituciones in San Roque demanding equality of pay between women and men yesterday, International Women’s Day.

The event was led by female councillors and union representatives who made sure that Mayor Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix and his male colleagues kept in the background whilst they went on strike for two hours.

The protest began in front of the town hall, but due to rain, it was transferred to a large marquee and then on to the Alameda Alfonso XI.

The march was accompanied by a chant which stated ‘Without us, the world stops’ and this slogan was repeated on banners held by members of the demonstration.

Early in the morning, members of the Association of Women Camp (Mudeca) distributed violet bows at the door of the Santa Rita School and at the local old people’s home several elderly women read manifestos demanding equality between men and women.
