A SUSPECTED criminal gang comprising five people – four of which come from the same family – have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja in connection with a number of different crimes.
The five – a 50-year-old Moroccan woman, a 33-year-old Spanish woman, and three Algerian men aged 52, 22 and 20 – are believed to be behind seven burglaries from homes, the theft of a car, driving without a licence and criminal damage.
Including the two vehicles stolen, more than €100,000 worth of goods has been recovered. Urbanisation La Siesta suffered the bulk of the robberies during last December and the items stolen ranged from cars to jewellery to mobile phones to pairs of socks.
During the investigation a pattern was discovered that the crimes took place at the same time and days of the week.
When the Guardia Civil carried out a surveillance operation, it was at these times that the same group of people were roaming the area but using different vehicles.
Their alleged modus operandi was to watch houses over a number of days and working out their routines.
When everyone was out, they entered the property by jumping over walls or fences and forced entry, always between 11am and 2pm.
Guardia Civil officers eventually identified each member of the gang and raided their homes, with a gun being found in one of the properties.
It was quickly confirmed that the weapon was not used in any of the robberies.
All five were detained in Torrevieja before being released on bail except for the 52-year-old man who was sent straight to prison pending trial.
