Man of War alerts still in place in Costa Blanca

WASHED ASHORE: Portuguese Man of War.

SIGHTINGS of strings of Portuguese Man of War along the Costa Blanca coastline have led to various closures and then reopening of different beaches.

Earlier this week, Benidorm banned bathing from three beaches, Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas but then as these dangerous pseudo jellyfish drifted on, visitors to the beaches were allowed to re-enter the water.

In the meantime, however, reports have come in from as far away as Mallorca that the siphonophores (a description of a creature that is made up of a number of different organisms) have been seen and bathers across the Mediterranean coast are warned to keep a very close eye out for these creatures which can give a very nasty sting.
