CALPE: A part of British Second World War history

A PART of Calpe’s maritime history is currently being turned into a television documentary.

RTVE director, Fernando Navarette, is in the municipality filming scenes for a programme centred on a German submarine that was sunk in the bay off Calpe back in 1943.

In order to carry out this project, Navarette has had to obtain the support of a Spanish Navy ship to control the ‘traffic’ in the area and to guarantee the safety of the diving team.  The filmmakers are also indebted to the cooperation of Calpe Council and the Royal Club Nautico.

This project is the culmination of 10 years work to account for the last 24-hours of the Nazi submarine before it was sunk by aircraft of the Royal Air Force flying out of Gibraltar.

A number of interviews have been carried out in Spain and Germany in order to reach this stage, and it’s hoped that the documentary will be finished at the end of the year and broadcast next spring.
