NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested seven men for their part in selling fake sportswear in a Denia street market.
According to a report in the Spanish media, they took advantage of the current staging of the FIFA World Cup and were able to sell mainly football shirts relating to a number of international teams.
The detained men are a mix of Spanish, Moroccan and Senegalese nationals and their arrests follow an investigation which began at the start of this month after complaints were made from legal clothing manufacturers who became aware of the alleged counterfeit items.
Once the shirts were examined, it was discovered that the price they were on sale for was significantly lower than those being sold by authorised distributors.
Following the raids on the market, officers of the National Police confiscated a total of 660 caps, 160 complete football kits (shirts and shorts), 52 wallets, 26 bags and a similar number of ‘branded’ backpacks.
