THE tourist who fell close to 25 metres from the Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante while taking photographs is still in a critical condition one week later.
The young 23-year-old Italian has remained in the intensive care unit of the Alicante General Hospital and, according to a report in the Spanish media, has shown no improvement in his condition following the fall that left him with extremely serious injuries.
The major injury is to his head, and such is the severity of his condition that doctors may have to rethink their original plans of repatriating the man to Italy.
The accident took place last Friday morning when the man slipped down the area that is very difficult to access known as the Baluarte de la Mina. It needed local firefighters and a helicopter to rescue him and take him to the Alicante General Hospital where he was operated on by a team of neurosurgeons.
Initial investigations into the incident suggest that it was purely an accident and happened as the young tourist was taking a selfie.
