THE President of the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, Margaret Bobowicz, recently presented a cheque for €3000 to Charo Van Hulst from DEBRA.
The Charity celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and what a journey this has been. When it was formed as a non-profit organisation in 1993, after the founder Inigo Ibarrondo had a son born with the disease, no help was available.
Now, 25 years later, as every child is born the doctors know who to refer the families to. DEBRA now plays a vital role in the local community, with only 30 employees in the whole of Spain, they support 264 families.
People with the Butterfly Skin condition have extremely fragile skin. A simple embrace causes open wounds. Without the support of DEBRA they are left facing the unknown alone. They raise their funds through donations, events and their three shops in Malaga, Marbella and San Pedro.
Right now, they are desperate for volunteers in their San Pedro shop. If you have spare time for a really worthy cause please call the San Pedro shop on 637 744 217. Ongoing research is vital to find a cure for this debilitating disease. Support and kindness are the overriding needs of all the families involved, and DEBRA provides this with open arms.
This being the 20th Anniversary Year for the La Cala d Mijas Lions Club, they are continuing in their efforts to raise the much-needed funds required by the local community. So many individuals need the helping hand they give so generously. Their next event is in the evening of September 15th at the Treetops restaurant in El Chapparal Golf.
The funds are raised through many Lions events and the 50 wonderful volunteers in the shop in 12 c/Torremolinos, La Cala de Mijas. The shop is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm, so go in and support these lovely ladies and gentlemen.
Volunteers and donations are always warmly welcomed. Tel 677059061 for information, or go on Facebook or the website www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/mijaslacala
