LAST Sunday many nationalities joined together with the Alfaz del Pi Norwegian community to remember the victims of the Utoya massacre seven years ago.

Vicente Arques, mayor, said: “we need to defend the values of solidarity, diversity, humanity and an open and plural society, in the face of terror and unreason that lead to nothing.”

The tragic events that took place in Oslo and on the Island of Utoya on July 22 2011 claimed 77 lives, most of whom were young members of the Workers Youth League.

At midday flowers were laid at the towns John Galtung de L’Alfas Park for peace, where the symbol of solidarity sculpture of Augustin Ibarrola is situated.

Alfaz del Pi has one of the largest Norwegian communities outside of Norway, and is home to the Norwegian Costa Blanca Club, two Norwegian elderly residents’ homes, two schools, a church and volunteer centre.
