AN operation carried out by the Guardia Civil and the Spanish Tax Agency (Hacienda) enabled them to confiscate over 5,000 packets of cigarettes during the space of one week.
The discoveries took place at the Alicante-Elche Airport and were valued at almost €25,000.
During the summer months that naturally see an influx of passengers, the security patrols and the number of searches by the Guardia Civil also intensifies, despite the problem of tobacco smuggling being a 12 month issue.
The recent major finds involved travellers from Milan, Dusseldorf and Brussels, and the three suitcases contained 1,262, 1,642 and 1,590 packets, respectively.
In addition, another 606 packets of cigarettes from another eight searches were also confiscated.
