TORRVIEJA’S mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon, was pleased to host a number of children from the Sahrawi region of Africa who will spend the summer in the town and neighbouring municipalities.

Under the programme called ‘Vacations in Peace’, Mayor Dolon thanked a number of local families for their efforts and their generosity in being able to bring these children to this part of Spain.

Carmen Perez, the president of the Saharan Children’s Home Families Association (FANS), said they had been able to bring ten children this year who will stay with families in Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Tibi, but hoped to encourage more to get involved to enable more children to benefit in future years.

Perez went on to say that without these summer breaks, the children would still be living in refugee camps and having to endure 56ºC temperatures without air-conditions and a shortage of water; conditions that require them to remain in tents at all times.
