SHOPKEEPERS and businesses in the Alicante Province were more than delighted to welcome the luxury cruise ship Britannia during her stop on the way to Barcelona from Southampton.

During the 10-hours that she remained in port, an estimated 300,000 was spent across the province by the 4,000 passengers.  Around 80 per cent stayed within the city and spent their money there, but the remaining – around 750 visitors – went on a number of excursions that took in Benidorm, Elche, Guadalest, Busot, Villajoyosa and Altea.

This was the second time that the Britannia – a part of the P&O fleet – has visited Alicante this year and in preparation, more than 31 catering outlets in Alicante city had special tapas on sale.  In addition, there were at least 400 stores participating in a campaign that offers special discounts for cruise tourists.
