A COIN court has ruled an 89-year-old dementia sufferer be remanded in custody in connection with the death of his 84-year-old partner at a Malaga Province care home.

The judge overseeing the probe said the man should be held in a psychiatric facility but could be jailed if none was available. He has since been remanded without bail.

The man was arrested on Monday following the incident at the DomusVi Sierra de las Nieves home in Guaro in the early hours of Sunday.

He was admitted to a psychiatric ward and was discharged before being moved to Alhaurin de la Torre prison on Tuesday evening.

Neo Oña, the Mayor of Guaro, said now was not the time to speculate on what had happened.

“It is time to let the Guardia Civil and the judges work so they can investigate the death,” Oña said.

The 84-year-old was pronounced dead after emergency services medical personnel arrived. The courts then ordered her body be removed.

The 89-year-old was reportedly restrained while he slept at the nursing home. The investigation is set to probe how he was able to break free of his bonds.
