FIVE people are being investigated in Benidorm for allegedly selling fake branded items in a number of shops.

The Guardia Civil has seized more than 500 different counterfeit items that were on sale for a much lower price than the more illustrious real things, and could have a street value of more than €70,000.

Those under suspicion are three Chinese women – aged 30, 31 and 35 – plus a 35-year-old Romanian woman and a 40-year-old Pakistani.  Between them, they run five shops in the Mercaloix shopping centre in the Rincon del Loix area of Benidorm and are very popular with British tourists.

According to reports, a series of inspections took place after a specialist branch of the Guardia Civil received several complaints from companies that produce the genuine items, such as clothing firms and the Swiss Watch Federation.

Of the items confiscated, the majority are made up of handbags, purses, watches, earrings, and caps as well as a selection of labels pertaining to well-known trademarks that were planned to be affixed to the goods to give them a more authentic appearance.
