COUNCIL chiefs acted quickly to ensure the safety of bathers after the normally pristine waters of Moraira’s El Portet beach were contaminated by an unknown source.

The beach was closed to bathers as a precaution after a regular water test discovered high levels of bacteria, indicating sewage.

Now the green flags are flying again and the beach reopened after further urgent tests carried out by the council proved the water is back to its cleanliest best.

Mayor Carlos Linares said it was an isolated incident as proven by the clean bill of health given just 24 hours after the alarm was raised.

Tests are undertaken on a daily basis and those taken before and after the reports of contamination were described as “excellent” by the local council.

The source of the contamination remains unknown, but it is suspected a boat may have washed out its sewage tanks while too close to shore.
