ACCESS to La Barraca Bay and Portitxol Playas in Javea will be closed to cars next summer to safeguard bathers.
The tourism department claims the roads leading to the beaches have become increasingly clogged with traffic, much of it parked illegally, and ambulance access was proving increasingly difficult.
There is also a risk to pedestrians, as they are forced off the pavement by thoughtless parking.
Announcing the move, the mayor and head of tourism said that ensuring the safety of members of the public was the priority.
The decision follows a similar move at La Granadella for the past two summers. In this instance free public transport has been laid on and the move has been well received by most users of the beach.
But those determined to take their car have apparently moved along to the sands of La Barraca.
