PEOPLE from across the Vega Baja area and the southern Costa Blanca witnessed spectacular weather phenomena as a tornado made its way across Guardamar del Segura and La Mata during Friday morning.
The severe weather comes less than 24 hours after a yellow warning was issued across the Alicante Province, although within hours clear blue skies and warm sunshine dominated the affected areas.
One reader contacted the RTN to say that he had just returned from shopping in Urbanisation La Marina and became trapped in his car.
“It must’ve been at least half-an-hour before we even considered getting out and trying to get inside the house, such was the strength of the rain and hail falling.
We then spotted the tornados in the distance that were coming toward us…it was quite frightening.”
The northern Costa Blanca municipalities of Oliva and Denia experienced several waterspouts out to sea on Thursday afternoon, and the unusual weather conditions have been the result of two storms building up in the Vega Baja and in La Safor.
