A FATHER has been arrested in Valencia after leaving his two children ‘home alone’ so he could go to the beach.
The incident might normally have gone unnoticed if it wasn’t for one of the children – aged 11 and 12 – climbing through a window and putting themselves at risk for a few minutes.
The detained man – a 44-year-old Russian – had decided to go to the local beach close to where he and his children live in Benimamet around 6pm, and shortly afterwards a neighbour called the Local Police when they spotted a child with his legs hanging out of a window.
As soon as the police arrived at the scene and saw the potential dangers, the officers decided break into the apartment and bring the child to safety. Inside, they found the two brothers but because they only spoke Russian, couldn’t communicate with them to find out why they were on their own and where their father was.
After a number of failed attempts to contact him, the father returned home later in the evening and admitted that he’d been away for a few hours with his partner, although he said that his children were old enough to be left alone. He also said that they were due to return to Russia within a few days.
However, taking into account what could have happened to the children, the father was arrested and charged with abandoning his family alone and for not fulfilling obligations to ensure their safety at all times.
