PRISON officers in Alhaurin de la Torre have camped out in front of the jail in protest at their “abandonment” by the central government.
They are calling for their profession to be “respected and dignified,” and were joined by workers from the prisons in Seville and Zaragoza.
The protest will last from September 26 to October 1 under the slogan “Your abandonment can kill me,” and is urging improvements in working conditions and salaries.
Demonstrators point out that the Ministry of Interior has increased the pay of the Guardia Civil and the Police, but have ignored the needs of prison officers, who also perform complex work.
Alhaurin’s prison spokesman Efe Manuel Galisteo said that staff had suffered a “wave of aggression” this year, with more than 600 incidents in the past year.
Mr Galisteo also revealed that he had requested a meeting with the Minister of Prisons, but had not received a reply.
More than 300 prison workers are expected to be involved in the protest at some point over the five days.
