Captain Tom who has just raised 29 million pounds for NHS, turns 100 on Thursday.
As a birthday treat for Captain Tom a Mark 9 Spitfire named the Spirit of Kent was planned to do a fly over his home. Scheduled for 8pm on Thursday to coincide with the 8pm NHS clap for carers, the plane from nearby Biggin Hill airport would have been the perfect salute to an extra ordinary gentleman.
The pilot Alex Monk was refused flight permission because the birthday treat was deemed as “Non Essential Travel” by the Government and would attract unnecessary crowds.
The Spitfire will now do a local flight within a 5 mile radius of the Biggin Hill airport which is permitted. A Wing Wiggle will be performed in appreciation of NHS staff instead.
Captain Tom has received an amazing 120,000 birthday and thank you cards.
The second world war veteran, refused gifts for his birthday and directed any funds and gifts towards coronavirus victims instead.
