Ligue 1 and 2 Seasons Cancelled

The Ligue 1 and 2 seasons will not resume after France banned all sporting events until September due to coronavirus.

Sport events cannot be held even behind closed doors.

The French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that the country’s sporting season is now over.

Uefa is likely to accept the decision, as prohibitive government legislation is a valid reason to cancel any league.

Previously all football was suspended in France on 13 March.

Uncertainty Over Champions And Relegation

It is not yet known if France football’s ruling body Ligue de Football Professional, will accept current league table standings.

Or whether there will be no promotion or relegation.

PSG Way in Front

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are comfortably top of Ligue 1 as its stands.

They are currently 12 points clear of second placed Marseille.

Rennes occupy the other Champions League qualifying position in third.

While Lille are in fourth, which would gain then entry in the Europa League.

As for the relegation scrap, Toulouse are bottom of the table 17 points from safety.

They are 10 points behind Amiens.

And Nimes are in 18th in the relegation play-off spot, three points behind St Etienne in 17th.

PSG Accept Decision But Want to Play in Champions League

PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said after the announcement that the club accepts the decision.

Yet Al-Khelaifi  also said that he still wants PSG to compete in the Champions League.

The Parisians are in the quarter final, after beating Borussia Dortmund in the second round 3-2 on aggregate.

The club is wiling to play its “home ties” abroad if necessary.

But this is subject to conditions to ensure the safety of all the club’s staff.
