Benidorm markets to stay closed

Benidorm Markets will not be allowed to reopen yet, as social distancing and the quality of foods sold cannot be guaranteed as safe.

Benidorm City Council says as long as the State of Alarm is in place, and sufficient food stuffs can be purchased locally at supermarkets that can maintain distancing and food quality levels, reopening of public markets is not feasible.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, with advice from local police could not guarantee public safety. Opening of the markets would increase traffic flow to the area, in addition a large part of the age range for locally bought foods is predicted as being the At Risk category of the older generation. The policing required for these openings would detract from the day to day tasks of containing the State of Alarm restrictions for the police force.
