James Bond’s Oddjob’s deadly hat turns up on Antiques Roadshow

The hat worn by Harold Sakata who played Oddjob in the 1964 film Goldfinger has actually turned up on the Antiques Roadshow. It was a deadly weapon and had a steel rim sewn inside the brim that could decapitate and kill when it was thrown at somebody. It was valued by an expert in the tens of thousands of pounds. Iconic in it’s day, it is now in rather a poor condition and no longer has the steel brim, although still worth a pretty penny.

Auric Goldfinger’s famous quote to James Bond (played at the time by Sean Connery) explaining about the hat. “it has a light but very strong alloy in the brim Mr Bond. I fear that may have damaged the felt covering but Oddjob can put on another, he’s extremely quick with a needle and thread. As you can imagine Mr Bond, a blow from that would smash a man’s skull or half sever his neck”

The episode of the Antiques Roadshow was filmed last summer at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, the hat being amongst a number of Bond memorabilia, including a car number plate, JB007.
