Spain and Italy, two of the countries hardest hit by the corona virus, are beginning to come out the other side from strict and lengthy lockdown. While Russia and Afghanistan have reported their biggest one day rise in new infections. In Spain, where 217,466 cases and 25,264 deaths have been confirmed. Adults were allowed back onto the streets to exercise this weekend just gone after 7 weeks.
Epidemics of diseases do behave in different ways, including the 1918 influenza outbreak which killed more than 50 million. A prime example of a pandemic that occurred in waves, the latter being more severe than the first wave. How these multiple outbreaks occur is being studied by scientists who are looking at everything from health policy and social behaviour to vaccination and community immunity, also called “herd immunity”.
