Russia: A baby infected with coronavirus born in Russia

A baby has been born infected with the virus which had been carried by it’s mother in North Ossetia, in the Russian Caucasus, health officials have announced. A doctor stated that “they are both at home and their condition is satisfactory”. A baby also infected with COVID-19 was born in mid April in Peru when the countries authorities said it was the “second case” of this type in the world.

Germany – Bavarian social life on the up from Monday

According to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, from Monday onwards, beer gardens and open bar areas will be accessible in the Free State until 8pm. Subsequently, innkeepers will be allowed to open interior spaces until 10pm. The Ministry also warned that a minimum distance of 1.5 metres must be kept between guests in beer gardens.

Japan falls into economic recession

Japan’s economy shrank by 3.4% in the first quarter of 2020, compared to last year. This being it’s biggest fall since 2015, Japan has already announced a $1 trillion stimulus package with the central bank expanding the stimulus measures. Earlier, Germany also reported an economic recession. The coronavirus pandemic has caused an estimated loss of $8.8 trillion (£7.1 trillion) worldwide.

Emirates plans to cut 30,000 jobs

Bloomberg has reported that the Emirates Airlines plans to cut around 30,000 jobs to cut costs in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. This measure would reduce the workforce of the airline by 30%. At the end of March, Emirates employed more than 105,000 people, the press agency said. The company also plans to speed up the withdrawal of the A380s from it’s fleet.
